Lightening / Whitening Peptides

While proper melanin formation is important for normal cellular protection, excessive melanin production can lead to hyperpigmentation, including melasma, freckles, and sunspots, which can lead to stress and a diminished quality of life.

Lightening / Whitening peptide is a special active ingredient because it regulates the complete pathway of pigmentation.

MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor) plays an important role in melanocyte function as it is involved in several processes such as melanin synthesis and pigmentation, as well as melanocyte structure, survival, proliferation and differentiation. Figure 1 summarizes the main targets of MITF [1].

In melanocytes, lightening / whitening peptides can inhibit CREB phosphorylation leading to decreased MITF expression and induce ERK1/2 phosphorylation leading to MITF phosphorylation and proteasomal degradation. Furthermore, in keratinocytes, lightening / whitening peptides decrease the expression of PAR-2, which mediates keratinocyte phagocytosis associated with actin filament reorganization. Figure 2 shows the schematic diagram of whitening mechanism of lightening / whitening peptides.
