Hand sanitizer, also known as hand antiseptic, hand disinfectant, hand rub, or handrub, is a liquid, gel, or foam that is commonly used to kill many viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms on the hands. During the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic, there was an increase in the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS) by the public and health care workers globally in order to prevent the spread of SARSCoV-2, the causative virus of COVID-19.

The main active ingredients of ABHS are ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and n-propanol, which may or may not be formulated with or without excipients such as hydrogen peroxide, gelling agent, humectant, fragrance, and colorants. Sometimes, more than one alcohol can be present in a formulation. Furthermore, the alcohol alone may not be effective against the spore-containing bacteria that are predominantly present in the raw material. Such spore-bearing bacteria can be inactivated by adding hydrogen peroxide (3%) to the ABHS formulation. In addition, other excipients may vary with different dosage forms, such as gel, liquid and foam. Figure 1 shows the denaturation process of ABHS and the killing of bacteria and viruses by disrupting their lipid membranes.
