Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally found, non-adhesive, biocompatible polysaccharide that comprises alternating D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (figure 1). Hyaluronic acid is isolated initially from the vitreous humor of the eye, and subsequently discovered in different tissues or fluids. It is ubiquitous in vertebrates, including humans, and is involved in a variety of biological processes such as cell differentiation, embryonic development, inflammation, and wound healing, viscoelasticity, etc.

3 Types of Hyaluronic Acid

Technically, there are three types of hyaluronic acid molecules that can be formulated into skin care products. All three of the hyaluronic acid molecules listed above have the same moisturizing properties, which is basically their superpower.
