Effect of Vegetable Oils Including Sunflower Oil on Organogel-Based Cosmetic Formulations

César, Francine CS, et al. International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2020, 42(5), 494-500.

This work evaluated the effect of various vegetable oils (sunflower oil, macadamia oil or olive oil) on the textural characteristics, rheological and sensory properties of organogel-based cosmetic formulations.
Formulation development and analytical results
· The organogel-based emulsions were either supplemented with 3% (w/w) of each vegetable oil - F02 (Formulation with macadamia nut oil), F03 (Formulation with olive oil), F04 (Formulation with sunflower seed oil) or left as a control (vehicle - FC).
· According to the results, the addition of vegetable oils to the formulation did not change the pseudoplastic rheological behavior. However, it did increase the area of hysteresis and decrease the work of shear of the formulations. Specifically, the sunflower seed oil led to an increase in the consistency index and all texture parameters, while macadamia oil decreased firmness and consistency. The organogel-based cosmetic formulation containing sunflower seed oil received the highest score in sensory evaluation.

Preparation of Sunflower Oil Based-Emulsions for Skin Care

Rahate, Amar Ramesh, et al. Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology, 2007, 28(7), 1077-1080.

Sunflower oil is commonly used in the preparation of cosmetic emulsions as these oils contain a high percentage of vitamin E. Of the total tocopherols in sunflower oil, 96% is alpha-tocopherol. In this work, sunflower and sesame oils were emulsified using a combination of nonionic surfactants to obtain cosmetic emulsions. The results showed that these emulsions were "skin compatible" and xanthan gum was found to be the most effective additive.
Preparation Procedure for Emulsions
· Span-80 and Tween-20 were used as emulsifiers. Xanthan gum, guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose, and sodium alginate were used as rheological additives.
· Emulsions were created using the mechanical emulsification technique, utilizing external agitation from a homogenizer. The first step involved creating the continuous phase, which consisted of the aqueous phase made by dissolving a precise amount of Tween-20 (a water-soluble surfactant) and natural polymer in distilled water.
· The dispersed phase was then created by dissolving a precise amount of Span-80 (an oil-soluble surfactant) in sunflower oil.
· The continuous phase was slowly added to the dispersed phase while continuously stirring to form the O/W emulsion. Careful adjustments were made to the agitation rate to prevent air entrapment.
· The emulsion was transferred to a 100 ml measuring cylinder and monitored for 90 days.

Custom Q&A

What is sunflower oil and how is it made?

Sunflower oil is a non-volatile oil extracted from the seeds of the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus). The oil is produced through a process that can involve mechanical pressing and sometimes solvent extraction. This process yields an oil that is commonly used in food preparation, particularly as a frying oil, and also has applications in cosmetic formulations as an emollient.

What are the nutritional components of sunflower oil?

Sunflower oil is primarily composed of linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fat, and oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat. It also contains a significant amount of vitamin E, an antioxidant beneficial for health. Through selective breeding and different manufacturing processes, sunflower oils with varying proportions of these fatty acids can be produced.

What are the differences between refined and unrefined sunflower oil?

Refined sunflower oil undergoes several processes, including solvent extraction, de-gumming, neutralization, and bleaching. These processes make the oil more stable and suitable for high-temperature cooking but can remove some nutrients, flavors, and colors. Conversely, unrefined sunflower oil retains its original nutrients, flavor, and a light amber color, making it suitable for raw dishes or those cooked at lower temperatures because it's less heat-stable.

How did global events affect the price of sunflower oil?

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022, significantly impacted global prices of sunflower oil, with increases as high as 58% reported in a single month. This price change was due to disruptions in production and supply chains in the regions where sunflower oil is heavily manufactured.

Is sunflower oil used in the cosmetics industry?

Yes, sunflower oil is used in the cosmetics industry. One derivative, PEG-10 sunflower glycerides, is particularly popular. This pale yellow liquid has a slightly fatty odor and is derived from the mono- and diglycerides of sunflower seed oil. It is used in various cosmetic formulations for its emollient properties.
