The moisturizing efficacy of O/W emulsion-based skin care formulations containing various natural moisturizing factors (NMFs), namely sodium lactate, sodium PCA, and lauryl PCA, at active ingredient concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5%, was compared. A placebo containing the humectant glycerin @3% served as a control group. The results of the study are as follows:
· At 1% concentration, the moisturizing effectiveness of all three NMFs significantly increased by over 25% compared to the untreated area and the placebo, with no notable differences among them.
· At 3%, sodium lactate outperformed sodium PCA and lauryl PCA slightly.
· At 5%, sodium lactate achieved maximum skin hydration after 30 minutes, while sodium PCA and lauryl PCA reached their peak hydration after 60 minutes.
· After this point, sodium PCA and lauryl PCA maintained hydration throughout the testing period, unlike the 1% concentration, which showed a decline after 90 minutes.
· Overall, sodium lactate excelled at all tested concentrations, and there was no significant difference between sodium PCA and lauryl PCA. These findings suggest that the free OH group in lactate plays a key role in its effectiveness.
