Ha, Nam Gyoung, et al. Skin Research and Technology, 2023, 29(11), e13499.
This work evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel hydrogel moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid (HA) cross-linked with silicone polymers, produced solely by irradiation without the use of a cross-linking agent.
· Formulation of HA-based hydrogel
The ingredients of the HA-based hydrogel include: Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Ceramide NP, Sodium Hyaluronate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hyaluronic Acid/Silicone Crosspolymer, Centella Asiatica Extract, Squalane, Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Sterols, Behenyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Tremella Fuciformis (Mushroom) Extract, C14-22 Alcohols, Arachidyl Alcohol, Cetyl Palmitate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sorbitan Palmitate, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Arachidylglucoside, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Trisodium EDTA, Sorbitan isostearate, Glucose, Fragrance.
· Performance
In the safety study, no serious adverse events were observed. In the efficacy study before and after application, skin moisture and skin surface lipids increased (p < 0.05), while the Xerosis Severity Scale (XSS) score decreased over time (p < 0.05).

An anti-aging formula was developed that contains a new natural wax complex that plays an important role in repairing the skin's hydrolipidic barrier and combines innovative active ingredients - such as low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA), sodium hyaluronate (NaHA), ectoine, gold and an anti-aging plant complex - to help achieve optimal skin hydration.
Formulation of an anti-aging cream
· Phase A: The oil phase comprises several cosmetic ingredients, which were melted at temperatures between 75-80 °C, listed in order of decreasing melting points: jojoba esters, Helianthus Annus (sunflower) seed wax, Acacia Decurrens flower wax, polyglycerin-3, octyldodecyl myristate, etc.
· Phase B: The aqueous phase was prepared by heating ultrapure water, glycerine, and a preservative to 75 °C. Once heated, carbomer and triethanolamine were added, followed by homogenization to ensure complete dispersion of all components. Phase A was then integrated into Phase B while continuously stirring.
· Phase C consists of viscosity modifiers, including sodium polyacrylate, hydrogenated polydecene, and trideceth-6, which had already been homogenized with 10 mL of the total water content. Subsequently, a portion of the active ingredients-fructose, glycerine, water, Aesculus Hippocastanum (horse chestnut) extract, ectoin, and pigment-was introduced into the emulsion from Phases A and B after cooling it to 40 °C. Once cool, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, previously dissolved in 5 mL of water for complete integration, was added to the emulsion. Finally, NaHA microcapsules, 22 k gold microcapsules, and fragrance were incorporated into the emulsion, ensuring they were evenly distributed within the cream without damaging the microcapsules.
What is Sodium Hyaluronate, and how does it differ from Hyaluronic Acid?
Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt form of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). While both serve similar functions in skincare, Sodium Hyaluronate has smaller molecules, allowing it to penetrate the skin more easily. This enables it to provide deep hydration and enhance the skin's moisture retention capabilities effectively.
What benefits does Sodium Hyaluronate offer to the skin?
Sodium Hyaluronate acts as a potent moisturizer and humectant, holding up to 1000 times its weight in water. It helps maintain skin hydration, smooths the skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and conditions the skin to look plumper and more youthful. Additionally, it protects the skin by scavenging reactive oxygen species produced by UV rays, potentially preventing sunspots and aging signs.
How does Sodium Hyaluronate contribute to anti-aging?
As we age, skin loses its natural water content, leading to dryness and wrinkles. Sodium Hyaluronate can replace some of the water lost in the dermis, enhancing elasticity and reducing fine lines. By supporting the skin's natural moisture barrier, it promotes a fresher, more youthful appearance.
Can Sodium Hyaluronate adjust its effectiveness according to environmental conditions?
Yes, Sodium Hyaluronate can adjust its moisture absorption based on the relative humidity in the air. This adaptability helps maintain optimal hydration levels regardless of environmental changes, ensuring the skin remains well-hydrated under various conditions.
Why is Sodium Hyaluronate considered ideal for skincare formulations?
Due to its ability to penetrate the skin deeply and its excellent water-binding properties, Sodium Hyaluronate is an ideal ingredient for skincare formulations. It enhances the skin's texture and appearance, providing it with much-needed moisture and supporting its natural suppleness, resulting in skin that feels fresher and looks younger.
How does Sodium Hyaluronate protect the skin from UV damage?
Sodium Hyaluronate has antioxidant properties that enable it to scavenge reactive oxygen species generated by UV exposure. This protective action helps mitigate damage caused by the sun, reducing the risk of developing sunspots and other signs of premature aging.
