Preparation and Evaluation of Cinnamon Extract Mask Formulation

This work evaluated the potential of cinnamon extract (Cinnamomum burmanii) as an anti-acne facial mask ingredient and its effect on Staphylococcus aureus, which is also a common cause of acne. According to phytochemical tests, the active compound components in cinnamon extract include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins, which have different pharmacological potentials. According to the stability, physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity test results, the cinnamon extract facial mask preparation has good stability, the physicochemical properties meet the standards, and has good antibacterial activity, especially when the extract concentration is 12%.

· The mask base is created using the gradual mixing method. Initially, the amylum oryzae is divided into two portions. One portion serves as a methylparaben mixer, while the other portion acts as a perfume solvent. Both portions are combined in a mortar along with ZnO, corn starch, and glycerin. The ingredients are thoroughly mixed to produce a uniform mask base.
· Once the mask base is formed, the next step involves blending it with the active ingredients (cinnamon extract) and the remaining corn starch until they are of equal weight. The mixture is stirred until it is uniform, resulting in a mask preparation that is ready for application.

The main compounds of cinnamon extracts belong to two chemical classes: polyphenols and volatile phenols. Among the polyphenols, cinnamon mainly contains vanillic acid, caffeic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid. In terms of volatile components, the chemical composition of cinnamon essential oil depends on the plant part from which they are extracted, for example, cinnamaldehyde is the main component in bark essential oil, while eugenol is the main component in cinnamon leaf essential oil.
One of the most well-known properties of cinnamon extracts, essential oils and their components is their antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. For example, in the cosmetic field, it was found that commercial cinnamon essential oil at a concentration of 2.5% in cosmetic emulsions has very good antimicrobial activity against a variety of contaminants such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213. The antimicrobial activity evaluated by disk diffusion test was found to be higher than that of methylparaben used as a positive control.
