Apricot kernel oil, recognized for its delicate yet highly effective properties, is a cherished ingredient in skincare, with historical roots tracing back to ancient Chinese texts and early European adaptation. Known scientifically as Prunus Armeniaca, this oil is esteemed for its versatility and effectiveness in addressing a variety of skin needs. Extracted through a gentle cold-pressing process, apricot kernel oil is a premium product characterized by its light, aromatic consistency. It is widely used in moisturizers, nourishing creams, and eyelid cosmetics due to its propensity to restore, soften, and rejuvenate sensitive, aging, and baby skin. Its anti-inflammatory and soothing qualities make it ideal for individuals dealing with dry, itchy skin or minor conditions like eczema and sunburn. Moreover, apricot kernel oil is a popular addition to baby skincare products, affirming its suitability for even the most delicate skin types. Beyond skincare, it serves as an excellent treatment for hair, promoting growth and thickness when used as a weekly hot oil treatment, and it soothes dry cuticles with regular application.

This work explored the chemical composition of apricot kernel oil (AKO) and evaluated its antioxidant properties. A common extraction procedure was adopted, using hexane as solvent, followed by analysis of the fatty acid composition of the oil. In addition, several methods were used to determine its antioxidant properties, including reducing power (FRAP assay) and anti-radical activity (DPPH assay).
Composition and antioxidant properties
· Apricot kernel oil contains high levels of oleic and palmitoleic acids, which are beneficial for health.
· The main volatile compounds found in the oil were 2-methyl propanal, benzaldehyde, and benzyl alcohol.
· Benzaldehyde was identified as the primary component of the kernel's essential oil.
· Additionally, the oil displayed a low level of antioxidant activity, indicating its ability to neutralize free radicals.
· In conclusion, the study suggests that apricot kernels are a valuable source of oil that could be used in the food and cosmetic sectors.

An apricot kernel oil based massage cream formulation was developed and evaluated for its quality characteristics, functional properties, sensory properties and any adverse effects on the skin. The results showed that wild apricot kernel oil can be used to develop a good quality massage cream. The inclusion of 10-15% apricot kernel oil in the apricot massage cream improves the quality of the product and meets BIS standards.
Formula of apricot kernel oil based massage cream
· The oil phase included oil soluble raw materials such as apricot oil, stearic acid, shea butter, GMS, and emulsifying wax, while the water phase consisted of water soluble raw materials including water, EDTA, and glycerin. A cold phase containing preservatives was also prepared.
· Both the oil and water phases were heated separately over a water bath until reaching 70oC, then blended together until a cream of the desired consistency was achieved. The cold phase was then added and properly mixed in.
The resulting cream was filled into PET jars. The apricot massage cream was formulated using varying concentrations of oil: 5% (T1), 10% (T2), 15% (T3), 20% (T4), 25% (T5), with a commercial apricot based cream used as a reference.
