Because petroleum jelly is the main ingredient in many topical ointment and cream formulations, the quality and functionality of these products depend largely on the rheological properties of petroleum jelly itself. This work measured the steady shear flow properties of petroleum jelly at various shear rates using a strain-controlled rheometer at 37°C.
Stable shear flow behavior of petroleum jelly
· The presence of a yield stress in petroleum jelly is due to its three-dimensional network structure, which resists flow and plays a vital role in the product's storage stability and sensory characteristics.
· A significant non-Newtonian shear-thinning flow behavior is observed in petroleum jelly, which can be accurately described by a power-law equation. This behavior is thought to result from the disruption of a crystalline network under mechanical shear deformation, enhancing the sensory qualities of products in which petroleum jelly is used.
· The Casson, Mizrahi-Berk, Heinz-Casson, and Herschel-Bulkley models are all suitable for quantitatively describing the steady shear flow behavior of petroleum jelly, with the Herschel-Bulkley model showing the best applicability. On the other hand, the Bingham model does not provide a valid description of the flow behavior.
