Manufacture Similar to squalane, squalane-light (or hemisqualane) is produced by fermentation of sugarcane using the non-pathogenic yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. This fermentation results in farnesene. After removing the yeast, farnesene is then further dimerized and hydrogenated to the oily hydrocarbon hemisqualane. The molecule has half the length of squalane (only 13-15 carbons as compared to 30 carbons of squalane).

Custom Q&A

What is Squalane Light, and what are its primary benefits?

Squalane Light is a highly stable, light emollient oil with a pleasant skin feel. It originates from the hydrogenation of squalene, which is now commonly sourced from olive oil instead of shark livers. The product is non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and hypoallergenic, making it suitable for various skin types. Its primary benefits include increasing skin respiration, preventing moisture loss, and softening the skin without leaving an oily after-feel.

How is Squalane Light different from squalene?

Squalene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon oil prone to oxidation and polymerization due to its six double bonds. Through hydrogenation, it is converted into squalane, resulting in a stable, saturated oil. This conversion enhances its shelf life and stability while maintaining its emollient properties, making it suitable for a broader range of cosmetic and skincare applications.

Can Squalane Light be used in hair care products?

Yes, Squalane Light can be used in hair care products as a conditioning agent. It serves as an excellent emollient, making hair softer and more manageable without leaving an oily residue. Its ability to disperse pigments and its miscibility with mineral and vegetable oils also make it an ideal ingredient for such formulations.

Why is Squalane Light considered a good choice for skincare emulsions used in cold conditions?

Squalane Light is particularly suitable for skincare emulsions in cold conditions because of its excellent stability and miscibility with other oils and nonpolar solvents. It has the ability to effectively disperse pigments and function as a perfume fixative. These properties ensure that emulsions remain effective and aesthetically pleasing, even in challenging environmental conditions.

Is Squalane Light suitable for sensitive or allergy-prone skin?

Yes, Squalane Light is ideal for sensitive or allergy-prone skin because it is non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and hypoallergenic. This makes it a safe and effective choice for individuals who need gentle skincare solutions without the risk of adverse reactions.
