Ahmad, Faiyaz, et al. Global Journal of Medical Research, 2012, 12(11), 25-34.
This study evaluated extracts of Raphanus sativus (radish) for their antimicrobial potential. Different solvents have been utilized to extract radish substances for testing against multiple bacterial pathogens.
· Evaluation Methods
Researchers determined in vitro antimicrobial activity through the agar well diffusion method by measuring the inhibition zone's diameter. The study tested the antimicrobial effectiveness of extracts made with ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, benzene, hot water, and cold water. The strains tested included Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella sonnei, Salmonella typhi, and Salmonella paratyphi strains.
· Evaluation Results
The Ethanolic and Methanolic extracts produced the strongest antibacterial effects with inhibition zones between 12-21mm while the Aqueous cold extract exhibited the weakest protection with zones between 7-9mm against all tested bacterial strains.
Different extracts from Raphanus sativus seeds contain Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Glycosides, Phenols, Tannins, Saponin, Sterols and Proteins which likely account for their demonstrated antibacterial properties. Ethnolic and methnolic extracts serve as potential treatments for infections by the bacterial strains examined in this research.
Zahid, Muhammad, et al. Gels, 2021, 7(3), 107.
In this study, radish seed extract (SE) and sodium alginate (SA) were mixed to form hydrogels, and their effects on wound healing were evaluated by chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The experiment showed that all hydrogels containing radish seed extracts showed significant therapeutic effects compared with the control hydrogels, but the healing effect gradually weakened as the extract ratio decreased.
Preparation of sodium alginate-radish seed extract hydrogels
· A stock solution was created by dissolving 3 g of sodium alginate in 100 mL of distilled water. This solution was then placed on a magnetic stirrer and mixed for 5 hours at room temperature to ensure complete dissolution of the sodium alginate, resulting in a clear and consistent mixture.
· The SA-SE hydrogels were developed by combining the sodium alginate solution with radish seed extract at various concentration ratios using a freeze-thaw method. The mixtures were prepared in a culture dish and stirred according to the specified concentrations in the accompanying table. All samples were then stored overnight at -20 °C.
· The samples underwent NaOH solution treatment for coagulation before being refrozen at -20 °C for a duration of 12 hours. The samples received two absolute alcohol washes before being treated with distilled water to achieve pH neutrality. The samples underwent a 24-hour thawing process in a 37 °C oven after washing.
