Description PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate is a synthetic cosmetic ingredient that is often used as an emollient, or skin conditioner, in various personal care products. It is a water-soluble, clear, colorless to pale yellow, viscous liquid that is derived from myristic acid, a fatty acid found in coconut oil and other vegetable oils. PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate is known for its ability to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by hydrating and softening the skin. It is commonly found in facial moisturizers, anti-aging creams, and other skin care products. It may also be used in hair care products, such as shampoos and conditioners, to help improve the texture and appearance of hair.
Appearance clear, colorless liquid
Application 1. PPG-3 benzyl ether myristate is commonly used in personal care products as an emollient, which helps to soften and smooth the skin.
2. It is used in creams, lotions, and various skincare products as it has good spreading and lubricating properties.
3. Due to its good skin penetration properties, it is also used in anti-aging formulations and sunscreens to enhance the efficacy of active ingredients.
4. PPG-3 benzyl ether myristate can also act as a viscosity regulator in cosmetic formulations, helping to adjust the flow and texture of the product.
5. In hair care products, it can function as a conditioning agent, reducing static and improving the overall feel and appearance of the hair.

Product Overview

PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate serves as a versatile emollient ester, delivering benefits akin to silicone with added advantages. This off-white liquid, noted for its low odor, is non-volatile and gentle on the skin, avoiding any drying impact. Its compatibility with a wide range of ingredients, including Cyclomethicone and its dispersibility in dimethicone and water, makes it an excellent choice for formulations. Unlike silicone, it does not spread spontaneously on the skin, but rather forms films that are beneficial for sunscreen application and retaining essential oils. It is adept at wetting pigments and solid UV filters, making it invaluable in products such as makeup and sunscreens by stabilizing emulsions, enhancing gloss, solubilizing sunscreen agents, and preventing whitening effects. PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate is extensively incorporated into antiperspirants, liquid makeup, sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, creams, lotions, lip care, and treatment products, with usage concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 50%.

Case Study

In Vitro Effects of PPG-3-Benzyl Myristate Emollient on Drug Release

Alioglu, Burcak. 2008, Open Access Master's Theses. Paper 1028.

Several commonly used skin emollients (including PPG-3-benzyl myristate) were evaluated for their potential release enhancing effects on the in vitro release of ketorolac tromethamine, a nonsteroidal drug with potent analgesic and moderate anti-inflammatory properties, from topical emulsions.
Topical formulations of oil-in-water emulsions with 1.65% ketorolac tromethamine were developed. Six formulations were created using three different emollients: sucrose polysoylate, di-ppg-2-myreth-10 adipate, and ppg-3-benzyl myristate, each at concentrations of 1% and 5%. The in vitro release of ketorolac tromethamine from these emulsions was analyzed using a static Franz diffusion cell, with diffusion studies conducted on cellulose ester and silica membranes.
The experimental results showed that PPG-3-benzyl myristate increased the release rate of ketorolac tromethamine on cellulose ester and silicone membranes at 1% and 5%. PPG-3-benzyl myristate at a concentration of 1% increased the complex viscosity and thixotropy values but had no effect on viscosity, and at a concentration of 5%, it decreased thixotropy.

Custom Q&A

What are the primary benefits of using PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate in cosmetic formulations?

PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate is a multifunctional emollient ester that offers a range of benefits. It provides a silicone-like shine and feel, yet delivers additional advantages not available with silicones. It is non-volatile and does not have a drying effect on the skin. Additionally, it enhances sunscreen deposition, stabilizes high silicone load emulsions, and improves pigment and UV filter wetting. PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate is also known for its excellent emulsification properties and broad compatibility with other ingredients.

How does PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate compare to silicones?

While both PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate and silicones offer shine and smooth application, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate provides added benefits such as non-volatility and broader compatibility with other formulation ingredients. Unlike silicones, it forms films aiding in the retention of essential oils and reduces the dry-off effect. Moreover, it enhances gloss/shine and helps eliminate undesirable whitening/soaping effects in formulations.

In what types of products is PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate commonly used?

PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate is versatile and used across various personal care products. It is commonly found in antiperspirants, liquid makeup, sunscreens, shampoos and conditioners, creams and lotions, lip care products, and treatment products. Its ability to stabilize emulsions and improve product performance makes it a valuable ingredient in a wide range of formulations.

What concentrations of PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate are typically used in formulations?

PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate can be used in concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 50% in formulations, depending on the desired effect and product type. Its flexibility allows formulators to tailor its use to meet specific performance requirements in diverse product applications.

Are there any specific formulation benefits of using PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate in sunscreens?

Yes, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate offers significant benefits in sunscreen formulations. It aids in sunscreen ingredient solubilization and ensures better deposition of the active agents on the skin. This emollient ester also helps in wetting solid UV filters, contributing to a more effective and stable sunscreen product that minimizes whitening effects upon application.
