Two sunscreen formulations based on corn and tapioca starch were developed in this work, one of which contained PEG-75 lanolin as an additional film former (F2). The results showed that PEG-75 lanolin was effective in improving the formulation stability and efficacy, and better performance and efficacy could be achieved without increasing the UV filter dosage.
Preparation of sunscreen formulations
· The sunscreens were developed as oil in water emulsions, with separate weighing of the aqueous phase and oily phase. The aqueous phase consisted of rheological modifiers like corn and tapioca starches, humectant vegetal glycerin, ion chelator disodium EDTA, and water. The oil phase included UV filters (bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, octyl metoxicinamate), emulsifier polyglyceryl-6 distearate, and oil phase antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene. Both phases were heated to around 70 ◦C, with the aqueous phase added to the oily phase using a mechanical stirrer. In the F2 formulation, PEG-75 lanolin was included in the aqueous phase before heating.
· Following 10 minutes of stirring, the preservative dispersed in humectant butylene glycol was added to the formulations and stirred for an additional 5 minutes. Afterward, methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol was added and agitated for another 5 minutes. Finally, the final formulations were packaged and stored for thermal stability at room temperature, 37 ◦C, and 45 ◦C for a duration of 3 months.
What is the composition of PEG-75 LANOLIN?
It is a polyoxyethylene condensate with pharmaceutical lanolin, with a mean chain length of 75 ethylene oxide units and an average molecular weight of about 3.970 Da.
What is the lanolin content in PEG-75 LANOLIN?
The lanolin content is approximately 17%.
What are the features of PEG-75 LANOLIN?
It is ethoxylated, water-soluble, and crystal clear in all concentrations. It is nonionic and compatible with other solubilizers, including electrolyte solutions. It is stable in a pH range of 2-10 and has minimal viscosity variations in aqueous solutions.
What are the applications of PEG-75 LANOLIN?
It is recommended for use in lotions and solutions, particularly those requiring high clarity. It has emulsifying, solubilizing, and emollient properties, making it suitable for skin cleansing and after-shave lotions, shampoos, and detergent formulations.
What is the dermatological profile of PEG-75 LANOLIN?
It is made from pharmaceutical-grade lanolin and complies with the European Pharmacopoeia. It has been used in hair and skin care products for many years without adverse effects or skin reactions observed in patch tests.
How should PEG-75 LANOLIN be processed in solutions or emulsions?
PEG-75 LANOLIN should be melted first when used in solutions, followed by the addition of hot water. In emulsions, it is typically melted together with the oil phase but can also be dissolved in the aqueous phase. It should be stored cool in closed containers and not heated above 80 °C.
What is the solubility of PEG-75 LANOLIN at room temperature?
It is soluble in water and anhydrous ethanol, partly soluble in ethanol 80%, soluble in ethanol 40%, and slightly soluble in mineral oil.
What is the use of PEG-75 LANOLIN in cosmetic and personal care products?
It is used in foundations, eyeshadows, lotions, creams, and lip balms to improve texture, prevent ingredient separation, and provide hydration and smoothness.
How is PEG-75 LANOLIN derived?
It is derived from wool wax from sheep through hydrogenation and hydrolysis of fatty acids, which are then manufactured into PEG-75 Lanolin.
What is the safety profile of PEG-75 LANOLIN?
PEG-75 Lanolin is safe for skin and hair, with a recommended use level of 0.5-20%. Higher levels can cause side effects such as rashes, itching, and redness, so a patch test is recommended. It is non-comedogenic and does not cause acne.
