Case Study

Formulation Development of Mango Butter-Based Cosmeceuticals for Skin Repair

Mandawgade, S. D., et al. Indian journal of pharmaceutical sciences, 2008, 70(4), 539.

A foot cream containing mango butter was created to assess its therapeutic properties and ability to protect and promote skin healing. Based on qualitative comparison and clinical case study results, it was shown that the prepared foot care cream showed significant healing response in two wound models (excisional and incisional wound models in Wistar rats) and abraded and cracked skin on the feet of human volunteers.
Formulation of mango butter-based care cream
· The foot care cream was created using mango butter and its olein fraction as a base at a concentration of 25% w/w, along with added vitamin E acetate at 1% w/w. The product utilized an oil-in-water emulsion system, stabilized by emulsifiers and an appropriate amount of preservative. The oil phase consisted of emulsifiers, emulsion stabilizers, mango butter, and olein fraction, replacing conventional mineral and petroleum emollients, while the aqueous phase contained water-miscible additives, preservative, and double distilled water. Both phases were heated separately to 65-70° before incorporating the aqueous phase into the oil phase with homogenization at the same temperature for 2-3 minutes. Stirring continued while gradually reducing the temperature. Perfume was added to the mixture at 40-45° and stirred thoroughly to produce the final product.
· The formulation process and product optimization included determining the appropriate quantities of mango butter and olein fraction for optimal emolliency, percentages of emulsifiers, emulsion stabilizers, essential additives (humectant, vitamin E acetate, preservative), aqueous phase, and aesthetics.

Development and Evaluation of Mango Butter-Based Lipstick and Hand Cream Formulations

Jain, Vandana, et al. World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2021, 9(12), 144-147.

Mango butter can be used as a substitute for cocoa butter in the development of cosmetic formulations such as lipstick and hand cream. The sensory properties of the prepared lipstick and hand cream were evaluated, such as melting point, pH, surface anomaly, irritation, spreadability, washability, etc.
Mango Butter-Based Herbal Cosmetic Formulation
For the mango butter lipstick:
· Various concentrations of mango butter were tested to achieve the desired consistency.
· Waxes were melted in a crucible placed in a water bath at 70-75 °C.
· Other ingredients such as dyes, pigments, preservatives, and antioxidants were added in a separate crucible containing castor oil, heated at 70 °C with continuous stirring.
· Stirring continued until a proper dispersion was formed, and fragrance was added to the mixture.
· The lipstick formulation was poured into molds and frozen at the required temperature to solidify into mango butter lipsticks.
For the hand lotion:
· Various concentrations of mango butter were tested to achieve the desired consistency.
· Mango butter, glycerine, and cetyl alcohol were weighed and placed in a beaker.
· Water and stearic acid were placed in another beaker and both were melted in a water bath at 70 °C.
· The aqueous phase was slowly mixed with the oily phase under continuous stirring for 5-10 minutes in the water bath.
· The mixture was stirred until it turned cold and the lotion was obtained.
· The lotion was transferred into collapsible tubes and labeled for packaging.
