Description | Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a small molecule quinone compound. Although it is relatively rare in plants and animals, its content in breast milk is relatively significant. The most striking function of PQQ is that it acts as a redox agent, which can effectively reduce harmful oxidants in the body. Its unique "charging" ability allows PQQ to maintain its active state after reacting with glutathione and circulating multiple times. PQQ can promote the proliferation and functional improvement of mitochondria. Mitochondria are the energy factories of cells, providing energy to cells by producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and playing a key role in regulating cell metabolism. In the activity of mitochondria, PQQ can also affect the biological clock of cells, which is associated with the aging process of cells and has a potential impact on skin aging. In addition, PQQ has a good binding ability to specific protein structures in cells, and its antioxidant activity mainly occurs near proteins. In contrast, other antioxidants such as carotenoids (such as β-carotene and astaxanthin) mainly play a role near the cell membrane. Their respective positioning and mechanism of action result in differences in the antioxidant effects in different areas of the cell. Therefore, in antioxidant defense, PQQ and carotenoids have a complementary and synergistic relationship. |

Application | PQQ can be used in cosmetics and skincare products to effectively prevent aging of the brain, heart and liver, and as a cosmetic anti-aging treatment for the skin. PQQ is an anti-melanogenic agent as it protects the skin from long-wave UVA, which causes protein expression that leads to hyperpigmentation. PQQ contributes to epidermal water dissipation, skin hydration, texture, viscoelasticity, and improves skin barrier and function. |
