Case Study

Sensitization Assessment of Fatty Alcohols Including Ceteareth-3

Corazza M, et al. Contact Dermatitis, 2013, 68(3), 01051873.

Emulsifiers are common ingredients in skin care products, cosmetics, and topical medications. Lauryl, myristyl, oleyl, cetyl, and stearyl alcohols are the fatty alcohols most commonly used as thickeners in cosmetics. This work reports the case of a nonatopic female and discusses contact dermatitis induced by polyethoxylation of fatty alcohols by patch testing.
Experimental methods and results
· Patch tests were conducted with various substances on the patient, including lanolin and fragrance mix, which showed positive reactions. A repeated open application test with the patient's deodorant also caused an eczematous reaction.
· Further patch tests after 6 months revealed positive reactions to myristyl alcohol, ceteareth-2, and ceteareth-3, but no reactions to ceteareth-20, ceteareth-25, and ceteareth-30.
· The results suggested sensitization to cetyl, stearyl, and cetyl-stearyl alcohol. The differing reactivities to the different ceteareths could be influenced by factors such as molecular weight and the number of molecules of ethoxylene present in them.
