Canola Oil for the Formulation of Anti-Aging Nano-Cream

Sumaiyah S. Indonesian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research, 2021, 4(1), 47-58.

Canola oil (Brassica napus L.) is rich in vitamin E, which is beneficial for skin care and slowing down skin aging. In this work, the formulation of anti-aging nano-cream containing canola oil was developed and its anti-aging activity was evaluated. The results showed that the canola oil nano-cream had a higher anti-aging effect than the control canola oil cream and was storage stable for 12 weeks.
Preparation of canola oil nano-cream
· Canola oil nanocream formulations were prepared utilizing a high-energy emulsification technique (high-shear stirring) with a mixer.
· The cetyl alcohol mixed with canola oil constituted the oil phase, which was then stirred on a hotplate at 350 rpm and 55°C for 30 minutes. The water phase, consisting of dissolved methyl paraben and propyl paraben in distilled water, was heated until completely dissolved and then cooled.
· Subsequently, Tween 80 and propylene glycol were added to the methylparaben and propylparaben solution, followed by stirring with a magnetic stirrer at 350 rpm for 30 minutes.
· Gradually, the water phase was added to the oil phase, and the resulting mixture was stirred at a speed of 2000-3000 rpm for 8 hours to form a thick emulsion.
· It was then homogenized with a mixer for 30 minutes. A few drops of rose scented perfume were added and homogenously mixed with a mixer to create a uniform cream mass.

Carnauba Wax and Carnauba Oil Based Oleogel and the Performance Evaluation

Yi B R, et al. Food science and biotechnology, 2017, 26, 79-87.

Oleogels have been widely studied for their potential applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. In this work, two oleogels were prepared, consisting of carnauba wax and carnauba oil, or beeswax and gcarnauba oil.
Sample preparation and evaluation results
· In an experiment, Canola oil and gcarnauba oil were heated to 140 °C for 5 minutes in an oil bath. Oleogels were then created by mixing carnauba wax with canola oil and beeswax with gcarnauba oil at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 15% (w/w) for 5 minutes, followed by hand stirring. The mixtures were allowed to cool at room temperature for 1 hour in beakers.
· It was observed that oleogels containing carnauba wax had higher crystallization and melting temperatures and enthalpy compared to those containing beeswax. While beeswax-based oleogels remained solid at room temperature, they transitioned into a liquid phase above 40 °C. This indicates that beeswax-based oleogels can undergo a phase change from solid to liquid-oil form through temperature adjustment.
· The solid fat content of carnauba wax-based oleogels remained relatively constant between 10 and 60°C. Additionally, carnauba wax-based oleogels exhibited improved oxidative stability when subjected to heat treatment at 60 and 180°C compared to the control oil (p < 0.05).

Custom Q&A

What is canola oil, and how is it derived?

Canola oil is a plant-derived oil obtained from the seeds of the rapeseed plant, specifically from Brassica napus. The name ""canola"" comes from ""Canadian Oil Low Acid"" as it was initially called ""Rape Oil."" This oil is recognized for its low level of erucic acid and is marketed extensively across the world.

What are the key benefits of using canola oil in skincare?

Canola oil is renowned for its moisturizing properties making it a natural emollient. It is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are beneficial for maintaining healthy skin. The oil's high levels of sterols may help soothe irritated skin, while its anti-toxin properties assist in clearing unwanted toxins. Its composition of natural moisturizing factors offers barrier-repair and anti-inflammatory benefits, making it suitable for creams, pomades, and moisturizers.

How does canola oil contribute to heart health?

Canola oil is high in monounsaturated fats, a type of healthy fat that can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It contains oleic and linoleic fatty acids and holds low levels of saturated fats, approximately 7% of its total fat content. These unsaturated fatty acids, including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 essential fatty acid, are crucial for health as they cannot be synthesized by the human body.

Why is canola oil considered superior to other oils like safflower or sunflower oil?

Canola oil is considered a highly rated oil due to its higher percentage of monounsaturated fats compared to oils like safflower, corn, and sunflower oil. Monounsaturated fats present in canola oil are notably beneficial for heart health and help maintain overall health, making it a preferred choice among other cooking oils.

Can canola oil be used for purposes other than cooking?

Yes, beyond its culinary use, canola oil can also be applied topically on the skin. It's incorporated into various skincare formulations such as creams, moisturizers, and pomades due to its emollient properties. Canola oil is beneficial in skin conditioning, providing hydration, and aid in soothing irritated skin thanks to its composition of fatty acids and vitamin E content.
