Butyrospermum Parkii Butter as an Adjuvant in Sunscreen Systems for Lipsticks

Sarruf F D, et al. Journal of cosmetic dermatology, 2020, 19(12), 3296-3301.

The potential of shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii) as an adjuvant in sunscreen systems developed for molded lipsticks was evaluated through in vivo testing and photostability assessment. The results showed that shea butter improved the photostability and in vivo SPF of molded lipstick sunscreens.
Sample preparation and evaluation
· Shea butter was incorporated into a sunscreen lipstick formula at two different levels (10.0% and 15.0% w/w) along with ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHM) and titanium dioxide. Skin tolerance was evaluated through in vivo testing, while the in vivo SPF value was determined using accepted methods. Furthermore, the photostability of EHM was assessed via high-performance liquid chromatography.
· The results of the skin compatibility testing revealed that the product did not disrupt the skin barrier or cause any negative reactions, confirming its safety. The in vivo SPF analysis indicated that the higher concentration of Shea butter increased the SPF value of the product by 35%, highlighting its effectiveness as a booster in sunscreen formulations. Additionally, Shea butter was found to improve the photostability of EHM, a widely used UVB filter in various countries.
